Introduction / History

The Handi are a small community in Sri Lanka, historically associated with service and labor roles within the broader Sinhalese society. Their name is linked to traditional occupations, often involving manual work and trades that supported village life. Over time, the Handi have remained closely tied to the Sinhala-speaking majority, sharing much of the island's cultural heritage while retaining their own identity. Their history reflects both resilience and marginalization, as they have often been overlooked socially and spiritually.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Handi live in rural and semi-urban areas, where work is often tied to agriculture, small-scale trades, and manual labor. Families tend to be close-knit, with extended relatives living nearby and supporting one another in daily tasks. Celebrations follow the rhythms of Sri Lankan life, with Buddhist festivals such as Vesak and Sinhala New Year being central occasions for gathering, feasting, and honoring traditions.

Food is a vital part of their culture, with rice and curry forming the staple diet, often flavored with coconut, chili, and local spices. Social life revolves around the family and community, and hospitality is a valued trait, with guests welcomed warmly into homes.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Handi people are almost entirely Buddhist. Their religious practices include temple worship, offerings to monks, and participation in rituals that mark life events and seasonal festivals. Buddhism provides the framework for moral values, community identity, and spiritual guidance.

The gospel has not yet taken root in a significant way. The Handi remain unreached, with little exposure to the message of Christ and few opportunities to hear it in their own cultural context.

What Are Their Needs?

The Handi need opportunities to encounter the hope and transformation that Jesus Christ offers. Many live with economic challenges, working in low-paying jobs that limit upward mobility. Access to education and healthcare can be limited, leaving families vulnerable to cycles of poverty.

Spiritually, the Handi need the presence of believers who can share the gospel in ways that resonate with their traditions and language. They need discipleship that helps them see how faith in Christ can bring renewal to family life, community relationships, and personal identity. Social acceptance and dignity are also important, as marginalized groups often struggle with recognition in wider society.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Handi will encounter the living Christ through relationships, testimonies, and scripture in their Sinhala own language.
Ask God to raise up workers who will live among them and demonstrate the love of Jesus in practical ways. Pray for physical needs such as improved access to education, healthcare, and stable employment, so that families can flourish.
Pray for spiritual breakthroughs, that Buddhist traditions will not be barriers but bridges to conversations about truth and grace.
Pray that those who already know Christ in Sri Lanka will see the Handi as part of their mission field and commit to reaching them with love, compassion, and perseverance.
